Thematic Talk 3
Theme: Beyond schooling: When is private tutoring (not) the answer?
Speaker: Dr. Ora Kwo (Comparative Education Research Centre, The University of Hong Kong) has a longstanding track of research and publication on teacher learning and education. During the last decade she has extended interest to the global phenomenon of intensifying private supplementary tutoring and how it affects school curriculum and students' learning. This presentation will begin with some cross-national observations of the intensification of a global phenomenon of private supplementary tutoring, before turning to students' voices from a study conducted in Hong Kong secondary schools. In the context of UNESCO's call for sustainable development, a quest for the future direction for coherence between public assessment and university admission systems will be pursued with a convergent focus on shared responsibilities and common good.
